Descend Downunder
Olympus Underwater Housing & Digital Camera

New... New... New...

This would have to be the most exciting time of the year. Warmer days, everyone is thinking of getting wet, the excitement of what this season holds for us and then we have the New Gear!! (Also an expensive time of year as I just can't resist the newest and coolest products)!!

So what exciting new products have we got for you to see? Well we have a brand NEW range of diving t'shirts - kinda along the same lines as No Fear, except made for divers. We all decided we HAD to have one of every shirt, but don't worry there will be plenty left for stock. Then we have found a great NEW toy - a little digital camera and housing. I have always loved the fun you can have with a camera, however I have always hated lugging the thing around and the waiting to see if you've captured that perfect shot. Well now you don't have to - with a digital camera you get instant results. It is inexpensive, easy to use, not cumbersome and no waiting for films to be developed. The Olympus MJV400 camera with underwater housing, currently in stock, and all for only $1499. It is really fantastic and I can't wait to give it a go. We have also got some other great stuff - NEW regulator and B.C from Poseidon, NEW computers from Oceanic and Uwatec, NEW fins from Scubapro and Oceanic, NEW masks & snorkels, and NEW bags for everything - fins bags, mask bags, gear bags - even back packs complete with a fish mural (I just had to have one)!!

Poseidon's Techlift BC

For a great read dont miss Adam Joss's article on his dive with the humpback whales. It all happened at our very own Bateman's Bay. Sure to be a once in a lifetime experience. I had a VERY excited Adam call as soon as he stepped off the dive boat to tell me all about it (rub it in!!) and he has written a great article for us.

My Dive with the Humpback Whales - By Adam Joss

Diving in Ulladulla on the weekend I was lucky enough to find myself in the middle of a pool of Humpback whales migrating down the coastline. I couldn't believe my luck. Until this day I'd never even seen a live wild whale.

The morning started like any other morning diving on the coast. Meet at the dive shop, head down to the boat, meet the other divers - Dave & Steven - gear up and off we go. Five minutes into our 20-minute boat ride to Burrill Rocks we stop the boat to watch two humpbacks about 300 - 400m away. All in the boat were very excited, but it only lasted a couple of minutes and they were gone. Anyway off to the dive site and in to the water we go, making our way down to the reef which starts with a shelf at about 10 metres and drops off over the edge to about 27 metres.

Down for about 5 minutes and I'm beginning to think I am hearing things. I could almost swear I could hear moaning. I know our boats captain didn't have any special guests on board with him so it couldn't be him, besides we were now 25 metres below the surface. A couple of minutes later and there was no mistaking the whales songs. The sound was all around us, it came from no particular direction, but you could hear them calling out to one another. It was just so loud.

After another 20 minutes of wondering if they were going to show themselves it was time to head up for our safety stop. At about 15m and ascending, I looked up from my gauges and for a split second I thought 'the reef is heading for me'. Obviously it wasn't it was a whale and it was huge. Only made bigger by the fact that it came within about 5 metres of us. I'd love to say that I just sat there calmly and watched it cruise by, but in fact I was just trying to get the hell out of it's way.

During our safety stop we were greeted a couple more times by the whales, and they seemed just as surprised to see us as we were to see them.

Now back on the boat and there are whales seemingly everywhere, slapping their fins, expelling water out their blow holes high up into the air and parting the water with their massive tails as they breached the surface. It's an experience I will never forget.
