The Solomon Islands is an archipelago of rain forest clad mountainous islands and low-lying coral atolls. Hidden amongst the many islands and cobalt waters of the Western Province lies Gizo, the second largest town in the Solomon Islands. Like much of the South Pacific, the Western Province saw many a battle during the invasions of WWII.

The island is surrounded by pristine reefs brimming with fish and alive with coral gardens. So why wait.

Diving Safety - By Scott Walters

Well its start of the season time again. All of you too soft (read have a few brains!!) to have dived in winter, its time to dust off the gear (in some cases literally) and head out for a dive. But before you do, I think there are two important things to think about, so that you can enjoy your dive more, and do it in more safely.

First and foremost is all your gear in tiptop shape? If you haven't dived for a few months (or more) your gear is in dire need of a once over. At the very least you should put it all together, make sure everything is clean and dust/dirt free, and works well. Possibly it should also be checked professionally, especially things like your regs, and remember your cylinders HAVE to be tested every twelve months by law. And don't forget to check things like the battery level on your computer, that you still can find enough weights, that your torches work, and, for some of us, that your wetsuit still fits (damn things seem to shrink every year). There is nothing worse than getting to a dive after a bit of a lay off, and finding your gear isn't working (well unless you find that out half way through a dive!!). Now I only mention this stuff, because I have done the wrong thing so many times. Turned up with the wrong gear, found my torches were flat, or had blown a globe, found I only remembered to pack half my suit etc etc etc. Not only a bummer cause you can't dive, but also embarrassing.

Well then we come to the next part of the equation, making sure you are ready to dive. I don't mean making sure you turn up on time, I mean making sure you know what you are doing. Diving isn't a difficult sport, but it can be easy to forget some of the basics over time. So before you go out and have a try, maybe think about brushing up on some of your dive knowledge. Flick through your dive text, or get a new one if your worried. Get your gear together and make sure you know how to put it all together. These things can avoid a lot of stress, possible embarrassment, and make your dive a lot more safe and fun.

If you really are worried about it, why not join us on our first club dive of the season on 29th October. There will be one or two instructors there to help get you on track (do a mini refresher if you like) so you can do it all with a little safety net. And for ten dollars (including a bbq after the dive), it's the cheapest way of getting back in the water you'll ever find.

Hope we see you all there.
