Descend in the Solomon’s..

I know you’ve heard it all before, 29 deg.C water temperature, 30 -40 metres of visibility, WW11 ship and plane wrecks, manta rays, turtles, sharks, amazing drop-offs, huge gorgonian corals, more Nemo’s than you can poke a stick at and a fabulous group of 19 divers made for a great trip to the Solomon’s.

Gizo 2006 Trip Report. By Stan Bugg.

Evri Samting Yu Wantem Save long Gizo, be yu Fraet Tumas Blong Askem.

(Everything you wanted to know about Gizo but were afraid to ask.)

  • Gizo residents actually do not use betal nut. They are the world’s largest consumers of red cordial.
  • A GANICA (Gizo and Neighbouring Islands Carvers Association) annual meeting to plan collective marketing strategy for the next financial year, has adopted as its slogan; "When in doubt, act pathetic."
  • When carvers say they need money for school fees, do not be skeptical. They all send their children to Geelong Grammar.
  • Cars in Gizo are specially modified to only have reverse, first and second gear.
  • Gizo harbour regulations require any vessel tied to the main jetty for more than 24 hours to have at least 25% of its total weight in rust, and a list of at least 10o.
  • Stan and Brian each ate their body weight in bananas during their stay. They reported no ill effects other than startling regularity.
  • Economic analysts are puzzled by the huge spike in coffee consumption in the time period coinciding with the Descend dive team’s visit to Gizo. Urgent supplies were flown in several times over the week.
  • An unfortunate side affect of being confronted by a seafood-dominated menu on a daily basis, involved one Albury traveler who was seen cutting a picture of a steak out of a magazine and eating it.
  • A taste of middle eastern culture overwhelmed the Gizo hotel on the evening of 21st September, to the bemusement of many hotel residents.
  • In Mexico they are so lacking in time stress that they use the term ‘manana’, indicating that everything can wait until later. In Gizo nothing is quite so urgent.
  • At the Gizo hotel restaurant they have a policy; If your meal does not arrive within three days, it’s free.
  • Among hotel security staff, teeth are optional.
  • The daily parade of lycra-clad divers from the hotel to the dive shop each day has resurrected a long dormant local cult which believes that the Bolshoi ballet will come to the Solomons for a series of concerts one day.
  • Plans are underway to shorten the runway at Gizo. After all, they only seem to need about a third of it.
  • A recent Gizo government decision to spend $50,000 on improvements to the roads was scrapped when they realized that, with current exchange rates, that would only buy 13m of bitumen. Instead, the money will be used to install a roundabout outside the hotel.
