One more of us, one less of them…
For those who don’t know me, my name is Amy Alexander and I’ve been working with Descend now for about 6 months. After working with all the gear and meeting all the divers I am about to officially become one of you, I’ve joined one of the courses this month and will be certified the first weekend in March. This little write up will show my progress up until mid way through the course… | | Magical soft coral | |

As I started my open water course there were a number things going though my head, feelings of excitement right through to the nervousness and hesitation of doing something new. I’m finally going to be able answer “yes” when the rather popular question of “do I dive?” is put to me. Since starting my course I’ve done 2 pool sessions and completed my theory. My first pool session involved me swallowing half of the pool due to being completely uncoordinated in regard to mask clearing, which I have pretty much got under control now… thankfully! Wrestling with the wetsuit was rather interesting not to mention painful! I think I scuffed the skin off three of my knuckles but in the end I survived and got the suit on. Everyone was so excited and itching to get in the water, we were in and out a little bit because the weather was a bit stormy. At the end of the night we got to have a go with the scuba gear, which gave us a taste of what was to come on the next pool night. I felt like a bit of a pack- horse with the 20kg of BC and cylinder on my back, this is obviously something I’m going to need to get used to! Night one went well and although tired and sore I was looking forward to the next pool session. Night two of the pool was all on scuba, which was really good to get used to the equipment. I seem to be rather buoyant so while everyone else was lying on the bottom I was floating to the surface, we solved the problem by adding more weight. I was getting a bit frustrated trying to learn these new unfamiliar skills only because I’m not someone possessing much patience particularly with myself J We worked on my mask clearing and mid way through the night I had it down pat – finally!! When Rick said that we were moving into the “big pool” I was a bit hesitant, but I pushed my mind aside and jumped in. I found it so much easier being in the deeper pool and I actually enjoyed it more than the 50m pool, I’m looking forward to the next few sessions and can’t wait to see what the ocean has for us. We only have one more pool session to do, then were down to Queenscliff for the sea weekend. I’ll let you know how it goes in next month’s newsletter…
