Start of the New Season…………..Training, Training & More Training – By Kirk

Yes, its here already, the start of the new season of diving. Well for most of us, the season never really ends, but at least Summer is here which means the pools are open and we can get back into teaching Open Water courses for the next batch of diving enthusiast.

A group of such enthusiast, Ben, Jack, Chris, Todd & Steve joined me and Richard Kou (a commercial student from our last commercial course) down at Queenscliffe for the certification dives. A couple of club members, Steve Watson and Troy McLaren also joined us for the weekend.

The weather forecast didn’t look promising but we headed off anyway. The conditions were challenging but everyone demonstrated all the new skills that they had learned and done a fantastic job with the first two shores dives completed Saturday morning. After a cuppa and some bikkies we jumped onto the boat and headed out to Kelp Bed reef. With the deeper water, the surge was not as noticeable. All the crew enjoyed the dive more, plenty of marine life to be seen.

Sunday presented better conditions for diving, with a boat dive first up out to Popes Eye. A great location for beginners and old hands alike on an Ebb tide. Everyone gets a buzz out of drifting around the corner and riding the current to the front of the eye.

A final shore dive at Cottage Gardens, where the open water students took the instructors for a dive. A great job by the guys to navigate their way out to the reef and back. Steve and Troy got some awesome photos of a Weedy Sea Dragon carrying eggs. Something that you may or may not know is that the male Sea Dragon is the one who carries the eggs until hatching.

All in all a great weekend to start the season.

Christmas has come and gone, Im sure that everyone would agree the year comes and goes faster each year. I hope that everyone has tried their wetsuits on since Christmas, remember that the suits always shrink after Christmas….. well mine does anyway.

The New Year has been busy as well. We have completed the full time course which saw a new batch of divers, Kathryn Padmore, Naomi Corker (our new staff member) Wal Taylor, Geoff Schneider, Riley Payne & Matt Shepard. The full time course was completed with the group heading to Queenscliff for their certification dives.

We have also finished our Deep / Wreck course. Steve Watson, Troy McLaren, Malcolm Nugent Andrew Kingerlee, Peter & Tom Lenergan, Kylie Clarkson are our newest Deep / Wreck certified divers. The group including Scott Walters and myself headed to Queenscliffe on Australia Day long weekend to complete our dives. Chris Abbott, Chris Lethbridge, Ross Hall and Mark Padmore also joined us for the weekend. Saturday’s weather was not the best and we only got one dive in, however Sunday was much better and we were able to catch up the extra dive. A few of the newly certified Deep / Wreck dives stayed an extra night and went out for a couple of more dives on the Monday.

A reunion dive out at the pit for the two Open Water courses was held on 17th January. It was a great turn out with some of our more experienced club members joining us to have a dive and keep their skills up to date and also welcome our newest members to the Descend Diving Club. All up we had 18 divers out there sharing their experience and a good day was enjoyed by all. Keep your eyes out for the next dive, we are planning a twilight dive which brings a whole new look to the pit. A BBQ will be held afterwards.

Congratulations to all our new certified divers. Keep an eye out for up coming events.
