Onshore Diving Supervisors Qualification (Diploma of Occupational Diving)
The ADAS Onshore Diving Supervisors Course is designed to train and certify suitable divers in the skills necessary to supervise diving operations. This will become a legal requirement when the revised version of ASNZS2299.1 standard is reissued. A number of diving contractors and major clients are already insisting on the qualification. Supervisors can be qualified only to the level at which they hold an ADAS diver certification. Qualification can be gained in the following ways:
- After formal assessment through an RPL process.
- A formal training and assessment course.
- By undertaking an ADAS Diving Supervisors traineeship.
Prerequisites
ADAS diver certification to the level of supervision required.
Age, character and experience to establish sufficient maturity to undertake supervision responsibilities. (Approximately 21 years but assessed individually)
Diving experience of 100 dives and a minimum bottom time of 100 hours for Part 1 (Scuba to 30m). Diving Experience of 200 dives and a minimum bottom time of 200 hours for Part 2 (Surface Supply to 30m). This experience to include 30 dives and 30 hours of Scuba. Diving Experience of 300 dives and a minimum bottom time of 300 hours for Part 3 (Surface Supply to 50m). This experience to include 30 dives and 30 hours of Scuba and 30 dives and 30 hours deeper than 30m.
Minimum surface support experience of 100 hours (tending, compressor operations, log keeping, stand-by diver, panel operation, air testing etc.)
Claims for such experience must be supported with documented evidence.
5. A current ASNZS2299.1 diving medical.
Recognition of Prior Learning
The RPL process is intended for experienced divers who are fully competent in all aspects of supervision. RPL candidates will be issued with a manual and workbook and are required to complete the workbook prior to assessment. The RPL process does not include any training. A thorough theory and practical assessment must be completed. This process takes five days and costs $1200 (GST exempt) and includes the provision of the ADAS manual and workbook and ADAS certification.
To be eligible for RPL the candidate must have documented evidence of a minimum of 100 hours and 100 supervisions at the level of certification required in addition to the prerequisites listed above.
Training and Assessment Course
The training and assessment course concentrates on revising the theory, background knowledge and practical skills of on-site diving supervision. It pays special attention to the fundamental responsibilities of a supervisor under Australian OH&S law, particularly hazard identification and risk assessment, and the management of diving emergencies.
The course is a minimum of 10 days duration (including assessment) and the prerequisites listed above must be met before participation. The cost of this course is $2500 (GST exempt) and includes the provision of the ADAS manual, workbook, logbook and ADAS certification.
ADAS Onshore Supervisor Traineeship
The ADAS traineeship scheme provides relatively inexperienced divers access to the total learning package consisting of formal training, work experience and assessment to develop and accredit their supervisor skills. Divers will initially apply to ADAS to register for the Supervisor traineeship and will be issued a comprehensive study pack and record of work experience logbook. Divers may undertake this step early in their career and it is in their own best interest to begin as early as possible so that they can start what could be a relatively long process.
The diver will then attend the Training and Assessment course (as above) however before certification they must acquire the relevant diving and diving work experience in their place of work under the direct supervision of an approved certified supervisor. This experience will be specifically targeted and must be formally logged in the ADAS Workplace Experience Record Book. The diver must log specified minimum times undertaking identified work-site tasks.
When all required work experience has been completed and certified by his supervisor the trainee will then apply for formal final assessment and certification.
At the completion of this course you will be rewarded with a Diploma of Occupational Diving.
