Course Information

What We Need You To Do

During the course, students are to display common sense and conduct themselves appropriately in swimming pools. Scuba equipment is to be handled only when and instructed to do so. To ensure that the course proceeds smoothly, efficiently and enjoyable for all, students must accept the directions given by the instructors. Of course, if there are any problems or difficulties, students may freely discuss these with the instructors. Whilst in training, students should attempt to perform the practical skills only when asked to do so and when directly supervised by the instructors.

Students should not use any intoxicating substance or drugs prior to or during training sessions. Please advise your instructor if you are required to take any prescribed medication, or if your medical fitness changes in any way that might put you at risk. This includes common colds.

Students should at all times act responsibly for their own safety and for the safety of others. Correct care and respect for scuba equipment should be shown. Not only is scuba equipment expensive, but it must be properly maintained and cared for in order that it can function properly and safely.

Please bring a pen and note pad to each theory session so that you can take notes.

Practice your swimming. You will be required to swim 200 meters without stopping and at the end of the swim you must tread water for 10 minutes.

Please attend all scheduled sessions. If you miss a session you will need to make up the time with directed home study.

Please refrain from smoking in the dive shop, lecture room or during the practical sessions.

Please pay the balance of the course fee by the first theory session. If for any reason this is not possible please discuss the problem with your instructor.

Diving Medical Requirements

Diving is an arduous sport, and at times can require you to call on all reserves of skill and energy. For this reason not only is it necessary that you be fit to undertake diving, but it is most important that you are in good medical condition.

Certain recurring illnesses and diseases may prevent otherwise fit people from diving, e.g. asthma, diabetes, history of heart condition etc. Therefore it is vital that you undergo a medical examination (to assess your fitness for diving) before you commence your ocean dives, and if it is possible before you commence your actual training.

Hyperbaric training medicine is a specialist field, and most provincial medical practitioners have little experience or knowledge of this field, and rarely get the opportunity to asses divers medical problems. This often results in an incomplete or unsatisfactory medical examination to determine diving fitness. Our experience in monitoring the diving medicals submitted to us often results in having to send the diver back to properly complete the required procedure, as a correct determination of diving fitness is essential for the divers safety. To assist in this matter we have been able to arrange for the medicals to be completed by as follows –
